You
seldom get to see these old English icons in such beautiful unmolested and
in pretty much original condition. The California pink slip we have, is one
of the very old versions when in fact they were just that, Pink, and are
only about 4 ˝ inches square in size. What this title does show us, is the
car has been given an * year, which in general always means the first year
the car was issued a California
title. In this case that * year is 1966, with a year model of 1956, which
would explain the incredibly good condition it is in, having only spent a
maximum of 10 years as a Taxi in London or where ever it was located. This
is not one of the regular old rusty English taxis we generally come to
expect but a really solid and what appears a very well cared for Taxi. It
still has the original Taxi meter and the “For Hire” sign on the roof that
actually works. Why Taxis are not all built like this with there great
passenger efficiency is a mystery. You can walk into the back, you can seat
5 comfortably, you have great headroom that would allow you to wear a bowler
hat if you so desire, while seated, and they have great leg room. Apparently
these are wheel chair accessible as well. The turning radius is only about
25 feet so maneuverability is a strong point. This being an early version
and called the FX 3 model, it has no front passenger door but instead is an
open area where luggage or a trunk would be carried. The windshield opens
fully and you have a sliding divider between passenger and your driver. With
only about 7,000 examples built between 1948 and 1958, and mostly used in London,
it is no wonder these early cars are so collectable. 1956 was also the first
year that the Austin
built diesel engine appeared. Prior to this, conversions from the original
petrol engines to Perkins and Standard diesels were done, prompting
Austin
to build there own engine. The gearbox is a 4-speed floor shift. If you
want to have some entertainment value out of your classic car try this, we
have already, and it’s a blast!! Finished in Hackney Black with a Deep Green
interior.
