This car is an incredible creation. Starting life as a
Mustang Fastback, built in San Jose,
California, coming off the assembly line on
the 17th of May 1965 and sold through the
Los Angeles district sales office.
Many years later, around 1992, a local car enthusiast,
whose credentials include custom car and wheel design
happened across the car and bought it. His goal was to
turn the car into a purpose built full track car that
could still be driven comfortably on the street. He
accomplished that rather well, and when Popular Hot
Rodding did a story about the car in July 2006 they put
the car against the stop watch. It ran a 12.81 quarter
mile at 114.4 mph although not set up nor been on the
drag strip before. It pulled 94g on the 200 foot skid
pad and, what at the time, was one of the fastest speeds
recorded by them, did 47.5 mph in there 420 foot slalom
course. Power is from a 302 Ford V8, bored .30 over to
take it to 306 cubic inches and develops 348 horsepower
at the rear wheels which is about 431 horsepower at the
flywheel. It runs 10.75 to 1 compression, has mildly
ported Edelbrock Performer RPM Aluminium heads,
Edelbrock intake manifold, a Holley 700 cfm carburetor,
Engle solid lifter cam with Erson roller rockers and
2.02 / 1.64 valves. Steve Beck of Check Point Auto, a
very knowledgeable and well respected Cobra/Ford local
mechanic put the engine package together. It has 4-wheel
disc brakes fitted, a 4-speed Bill Thomas prepped wide
ratio Top Loader gearbox with a McLeod clutch, a Hurst
Shifter and a Currie built
Detroit
locker Ford 9-inch rear end with 4.11: 1 gears. Another
very well respected company, Maeco Motorsports of
Northridge,
California and the preparers of many
vintage racing Shelby Mustangs and Cobras took care of
the suspension. Koni shocks are fitted along with Maeco
720- lb/in front coils with 160-lb/in rear leaf springs
and a 13/16 front sway bay. Wheels are 16X8 American
Racing Torq-Thrust II wrapped in DOT-legal Hoosier
245/45 slicks. The instruments are Sun Pro mounted in
the stock cluster for a stock appearance and the
obligatory
Shelby
style dash mounted tachometer. It has no radio, no a/c
and no heater. Seats are Procar racing styled with
5-point Jaz racing seat belts. Fitted with all of the
correct Shelby panels like
fiberglass hood, side scoops, GT350R model front apron,
Shelby rear ¼ windows,
Monte Carlo bar and Export brace etc. It has
a roll bar fitted and exhaust pipes that slip out in
front of the rear wheels. In addition the car has been
featured at the SEMA show in 2005 and 2006, Mustangs and
Ford Magazine 2003, Mustangs Plus Catalog in 2004 and
the above mentioned Popular Hot Rodding in 2006. Along
with this, model maker Maisto, produced limited edition
R/C cars based off this car with the license plate it
had BLK NSTY in 2006. The car was striped to bare metal
prior to painting and it shows. The body and panel fit
along with the paint are excellent. Finished in Hertz
Rent A Car GT350H livery, being Black with Gold stripes.
