1970 MERCEDES BENZ 280SL

$45,995.00

280SL’s are one of the all time most recognizable and great classic cars. They are consistently used for everyday use as they are strong, reliable, very serviceable and unbelievably elegant. Looking at the records we have, we believe this to be an original California car although it may possibly have come via Texas. Information in the records indicate the second owner was from St Helena, California area but possibly had a second address in Texas, at the same time, hence the confusion and owned the car from 1975 to around 2004 at which time the most recent owner acquired it. Both of these owners serviced the car on a regular basis and kept pretty extensive records that we have. This is a U.S. version that has had European Headlights fitted and also has the very rare and desirable 4-speed gearbox, with air conditioning, so the performance is as good as a 280SL can get, and a noticeable improvement over an automatic version and very hard to find. It also has power steering and power disc brakes. The mileage indicated is 87,408, and again trying to interpret the records this may be original as it was advertised as an original 85,000 mile car in 2004. Again looking at the records this owner used it sparingly, as did the most recent. As is often the case, these cars are both used regularly, or as a toy and used for special events or going to dinner etc. The body and panel fit are very good with the paint having been redone in 1998 at a cost of $5,700.00 which was a substantial amount for that period of time. Another expense in the records shows it had a factory rebuilt gearbox at 79,312 miles in 1992. The car is a pleasure to drive and does so extremely well. Finished in what we’d call British Racing Green but be assured Mercedes didn’t call it that. It has a Black interior, as is both the convertible and hard top, done at the time the car was repainted.
