1971 TRIUMPH STAG
$29,995.00
Here is a car that not everybody is familiar with, even some Triumph people aren’t aware of it. Originally one would think the goal must have been to compete with Mercedes Benz SL class cars. Out of all the Triumph models ever produced this has to be up there as one of the most unique and probably rarest of all Triumphs. Although the intention was to sell around 12,000 cars annually, that number never materialized, with the actual number built for the world at 25,877 cars over a seven year period and of that only 6,780 were delivered to the US dealer network between 1971 and 1973. This example, although registered as a 1972 model is a true 1971 version with a build date of March 1971. Power came from Triumphs own 3 liter V8 engine that developed about 145 horsepower. This version has the 4-speed gearbox, an automatic was available but the superior car to drive would arguably be the 4-speed car. Top speed was in the 120 to 125 mph range. Performance was brisk and they are a surprisingly nice car to drive especially compared to some other Triumphs of the era. The car we have is possibly as nice as any in existence. The previous owner was a friend and he had bought the car a number of years ago from a gentleman that had shown the car extensively. I have been told that the car has never been washed by either of these two owners. Unfortunately we had to buy the car from our friends estate and the extensive restoration documentation and trophies that I viewed when my friend bought the car have not been located. The twin Stromberg carburetors have been replaced with a single Holley 4-barrel which really works well on it and for most people would have to be considered an asset and it has had electronic ignition installed. The car even retains the original British Leyland AM/FM Radio. Finished in Navy Blue with Black interior.
