1971 LOTUS 70B FORMULA 5000 HISTORIC RACE CAR This one owner car was purchased new by my very long-time friends Kerry and Charlie Agapiou in 1971. Still owned by Kerry Agapiou today and being sold on his behalf. The Agapiou brothers were heavily involved in motor racing and worked for Carroll Shelby in the early ‘60’s before venturing out with their own race team. On a side note, Jack McMullen played Charlie Agapiou in Ford vs Ferrari as Shelby’s crew chief at Le Mans. Charlie being the original crew chief. This car is chassis number 7170/F5/F3. It is #3 of only three of these cars manufactured by Lotus Race Cars. The Agapiou Brothers bought it in semi kit form. It is the last race car to be designed, constructed and sold by Colin Chapman while he was at Lotus Race Cars and the last built for customer sales. In 1972 the car was driven by George Follmer and sponsored by Roy Woods in the SCCA L&M Continental F5000 Championship. First raced 16 Jul 1972 in the Road America Grand Prix at Elkhart Lake, Qualified 9 – Finished 25, followed by Minnesota Grand Prix at Donny Brook (Brainerd) Q 3 – F 18, Road Atlanta Grand Prix Q 5 – F 8, Lime Rock Grand Prix Q 5 – F 17 and Riverside Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway Q 5 – F 24. Riverside was the last race of the season and George had light contact on the right rear that ended his day. A rare opportunity to acquire a one owner race car with extremely minimal usage and last driven by one of the all-time great drivers in US Motor racing 50 years ago. Kerry Agapiou had the car taken apart and then rebuilt too original specifications including an Al Bartz Boss 302 Ford engine and Hewland DG300 5-speed transaxle. Collins Racing Services did some of the required work. A few spare parts are included including an extra set of wheels, the original steering rack two rear uprights, a lower front control arm and a few miscellaneous bits. Obviously, a full inspection of all working parts and a complete look over would be in order before being driven in anger again. Last time it was driven that way was 1972. Unfortunately, in the last 50 years the original logbook has been misplaced. This will be sold on a bill of sale.
