1972 MERCEDES BENZ 350SL $13,995.00 This is a great opportunity for someone looking for one of the earliest examples of the R107 which began production in 1971. It’s very hard to believe its 50 years since introduction. According to the VIN this is the 1,509th R107 SL made. This example is a California car from new with the first service in its maintenance booklet being done February 22, 1972 by what was then known as Beverly Hills Ltd, now Beverly Hills Mercedes Benz. Sold new to Ernie Hahn who happened to be the developer of Horton Plaza in San Diego, the first successful downtown retail center. His good friend Jon Jerde was not only the designer of the center but loved the SL and Ernie sold it to him when it was about two years old. It remained with him and his family until last week when we acquired it. We have the original books with the car. These are the original and super clean design that the designers intended, slim chrome bumpers rather than the later versions with the chunky safety bumpers. Jon Jerde bought the car from his insurance company after a family member had a minor collision in which they wanted to total it. He didn’t want to lose the car so he purchased it from them and had it repaired himself. This is a common thing when cars hit certain periods in their life and value ranges sometimes are too low to warrant fixing according to the Insurance Companies formula. This then automatically creates the issuance of a salvage title like this has. It drives exceptionally well and retains the original radiator support panel with stamped VIN number and data tag. Recently it has had servicing that included the rear stabilizer bar, new tyres at 155,531 miles, all fuel injectors removed and cleaned, a C Service and reseal the steering box all done by German Motor Car Service here is Santa Monica. They have a terrific reputation. For quality work. The mileage now is 156,330. Cosmetically it is very good and looks great with its Chrome Alloy wheels. It has got some rust in the floors but nothing not fixable if you decide to restore the car as is likely to happen because of their fast appreciating values. The body though appears totally rust free with the exception of a small bubble below the 350SL badge on the trunk. Even California cars can get a little rust at 50 years old apparently. Finished in Silver Blue Metallic over Navy Blue Interior and Matching convertible top.
